Westpac generously co-funded the development of an economic study of the impact of dark sky accreditation on the Wairarapa economy. The study provided supporting material for the Wairarapa Councils to consider in the process for changing the District Plan to support dark sky friendly lighting. The District Plan change is a key requirement for achieving international accreditation for a Wairarapa Dark Sky Reserve.
The Provincial Growth Fund invested in the development of an economic impact assessment and growth plan arising from the international certification of a dark sky reserve in the Wairarapa. This is key support to ensure that the opportunity arising from a new dark sky reserve brings economic benefits to the people of the Wairarapa, as well the environmental and amenity benefits of dark skies and reduced light pollution.
Dark Sky Meter Sponsors
“A number of Wairarapa organisations have generously sponsored our network of light meters across the Wairarapa District. Six meters are up and running, with more to come in the near future. These meters take continuous measurements of the darkness of the Wairarapa sky. This monitoring means we can demonstrate the darkness of our skies, and will be aware of any change in light pollution that might threaten sky darkness. The meters also measure cloud at night, providing good information on Wairarapa’s stargazing weather.”
